Costs & logistics

The treatment stay is only part of the plan.

A guide for individuals and families organizing costs, communication, travel, and support at home.

When comparing treatment centers, it is easy for the quoted stay to become the entire plan. A more useful view includes what must happen before travel, what the price excludes, and what support will be available after returning home.

Separate the costs.

Ask for a written quotation that distinguishes the clinic’s services from travel, accommodation outside the treatment stay, screening, transportation, follow-up, and possible additional charges. Advocacy fees, if you choose independent support, are also separate.

Before making a commitment, understand deposit terms, cancellation rules, refunds after medical screening, and who is responsible for unexpected expenses. Ask an insurer directly about coverage and exclusions rather than assuming treatment or related complications will be covered.

Make responsibility visible.

Write down who is arranging each practical task: documentation, communication with the provider, transport, arrival, and onward plans. Identify a contact person and an alternative way to reach them.

Ask the relevant authorities about current entry requirements and the applicable legal rules. Confirm provider arrangements directly. This guide does not establish immigration eligibility, insurance coverage, or permission to receive or transport a controlled substance.

Keep clinical instructions with clinicians.

A travel plan is not a treatment plan. Questions about medication, medical eligibility, preparation, discharge, and readiness to travel belong with qualified medical professionals. Do not change treatment or medication to fit an itinerary.

Choose how family will participate.

If you are considering treatment yourself, decide whom you want involved, what information you want shared, and how communication should work. Family participation is optional.

If you are supporting someone, ask what help they want. Practical assistance might mean organizing questions, reviewing written costs, or being an agreed point of contact. Supporting a decision does not mean making it for someone else.

Ask what “aftercare” includes.

Request specifics: who provides follow-up, how contact takes place, how long support continues, what it costs, and how it connects with ongoing care. A broad promise of integration or support is not yet a practical arrangement.

Consider the transition home as part of the discussion from the beginning. Identify unresolved questions before booking travel, and leave medical decisions with the professionals responsible for care.

A useful document to bring together.

Create one place for provider questions, written quotations, practical responsibilities, contact details, and follow-up arrangements. Keep medical records separate and share them only through channels agreed with the treating professionals.

Independent advocacy can help organize this work. The aim is a clearer decision and better coordination, with the limits of what has been confirmed made explicit.
